The six sectors

The county is worked in six sectors, and the one you are in decides how the visit is planned more than the postcode does. Each has its own page, and every neighbourhood inside it has one too.

• East and North Valley Ranch houses with opened-up kitchens, poolside bars and a summer that leans on every piece of built-in cooling in the run.
• Verdugos and San Gabriel Foothills Craftsman and Period Revival kitchens under the Verdugos and the San Gabriels, plus the large foothill houses behind them.
• Calabasas and the Conejo Edge Gated streets and large kitchens at the western edge of the county, usually a 48-inch range and more than one cooling column.
• Central Los Angeles Downtown lofts and high-rise kitchens, 1920s duplexes along the Miracle Mile, and restored houses west of Figueroa.
• South Bay and Harbor Salt air, three-storey beach houses with the kitchen upstairs, and the older harbour streets behind the port.
